The Most Underrated Workout Hack (and how to implement it)

Updated: Dec 10

Fun fact: People log more workouts in the first half of the week than the second.

The week gets busy, schedules get full, we get fatigued from the daily grind

But there’s one simple hack that is incredibly underrated to help you get your workout in.

It works for almost anyone, whether you’re starting, restarting, coming back from injury, or building.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a total beginners or an experienced athlete,

It doesn’t matter what you’re training for

This one trick can make sure you get your training done:

Here it is, our all-time favorite underrated workout hack:

Workout first thing in the morning.

That’s it. It’s not sexy, it’s simple. It’s effective. And it’s proven to work.

Why does it work?

In the morning, you’ve got fewer distractions, less people are up and about (pulling your attention), and it’s your most ‘free’ time of the whole day.

Does anyone like waking up and crawling out of bed? Heck no. But once you’re up, it’s the best chance you’ve got at steering your day.

Here are 3 easy tips to help you get going in the AM:

  • Set out your clothes: Lay them out the night before. This reduces friction - you won’t have to make a decision in the morning. All you have to do is get up and put them on.

  • Start with Just 5 Minutes: Tell yourself you only have to work out for 5 minutes. Often, just getting started is the hardest part—and once you're in motion, you'll likely keep going. (speaking of 5 minutes, let’s just take this opportunity to plug Coach D’s 5 minute tip from episode 91 - go to bed 5 minutes earlier each day until you’re getting the sleep you need to get up and tackle your training)

  • Make it Social: Schedule a workout with a friend, join a group class, or use an app that tracks progress. (This is also why we have early morning Strength, Cycle and Run sessions …it’s wayyy easier to do this whole morning thing with others) (there’s something really magical about getting your workout done and seeing your friends before breakfast!)

Morning workouts are not only a great way to ensure you get your workout in before the day gets away from you, but it also is a great way to set yourself up to have a great day.

No matter what happens after training, you’ll have prioritized and done something great for yourself and your health, which is a win.

If you’re not currently a morning workout person, try it for a week. If you hate it, you can go back to doing it how you were before. But if you’ve been struggling to fit your workouts in when your days get busy, this might be your new favorite underrated training hack as well.
